What is a tattoo?
A tattoo is a permanent mark made on the skin by ink. Tattoos have been around for hundreds of years and are seen as a sign of expression. Usually they are done by a tattoo artist but they are also done in prisons and generally have very different meanings.
How is a tattoo done?
The tattoo artist inserts ink into the skin through a needle. This needle drives into the skin at 80 to 150 times per second.
Is a tattoo painful?
It can be, a lot depends on the location and the individuals pain threshold.
How old do you need to be to get a tattoo?
In most countries the legal age is 18, take ID if you look young.
Where should I get my tattoo done?
It is important that you do a lot of research when trying to find a tattooist. Make sure you visit as many as possible around your area and check a portfolio of the work they have done in the past.
Always trust your instincts, if a place doesn't look clean and fresh then simply walk away!
What are the risks?
Tattoos leave ink under the skin and so the biggest risk is from dirty needles and unsterile equipment. All tattooists should use fresh needles every single time to avoid any spread of disease.
Can I get a tattoo removed?
It is possible but it is both painful and expensive! The other option is a cover-up but what you can do with a cover-up tattoo is very limited.
What do I do after I get a tattoo?
Be sure to keep it clean using a liquid soap in the shower. Never have a bath or swim in the first 3 weeks as this can damage the tattoo.
Once the peeling and scabbing stage begins ensure you don't pick or scratch at it as this can also damage the tattoo.
Ongoing care is also required especially with regards to sun damage. Always use a factor 30 sunblock to keep the tattoo looking fresh and stop it from fading.
